T

he Jakarta Police will question House of Representative Commission IV member Fanny Afriansyah next week regarding his alleged involvement in the abuse of his child'€™s nanny, Toipah.

Fanny, better known as Ivan Haz, will face investigators after the police named him a suspect in the abuse case last Friday.

The police initially planned to question him on Tuesday but Ivan requested that the session be held next week, citing a working visit with other members of the House of Representatives.

'€œWe postponed until next week because Ivan said he would be on duty for a week,'€ Jakarta Police general director Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti said.

'€œThat is his right as a suspect. However, if he defies his summons for questioning three times, we have to bring him in by force.'€

Ivan, along with his wife Anna Susilowati, caught the public'€™s attention in October last year, when nanny Toipah, 20, fled from their house and reported them to the police with a gash on her head and bruises on her back. One of her ears was also injured and swollen.

Toipah was reportedly abused by Ivan, the son of former vice president Hamzah Haz, and Anna. The husband and wife reportedly beat and kicked her, hit her against the floor and threw a mosquito spray can at her every time their child cried.

The alleged abusers also reportedly provided Toipah with only one meal per day and had not paid her monthly salary of Rp 2.2 million (US$163.80) for two months.

Later, the police found that the couple had also abused two other domestic workers in their house. However, only Toipah suffered from severe injuries.

Both Ivan and Anna initially denied the allegation, but the police found footage from closed-circuit television cameras showing the abuse committed by the lawmaker and his wife.

Based on that evidence, the police questioned Anna as a suspect in December but did not summon Ivan because they didn'€™t have permission from President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

In accordance with Legislative Institution Law No. 17/2014, the police must receive the President'€™s permission before summoning a House member like Ivan.

'€œWe just received the permission letter from the President to question Ivan as a suspect last Thursday. We immediately sent the summons letter,'€ said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Mohammad Iqbal.

On the same day, it was reported that Ivan had been arrested by the Army Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) after being found consuming drugs with eight Kostrad members, five policemen and five civilians.

Confirming the report, Iqbal said that Kostrad had carried out urine tests on a number of people late Monday evening. He added that among those testing positive for illicit drugs was a civilian named Ivan Haz.

'€œThe police, however, are still investigating whether he was Ivan the lawmaker or not,'€ said Iqbal.

On Tuesday afternoon, both Ivan Haz and his lawyer could not be reached for comment.

Ivan made the news in 2003 after alleged involvement in illegal-car sales. He was also accused of assaulting a car dealer. There is no record of the police detaining him.
