T

he Public Works and Public Housing Ministry has allocated Rp 5.7 trillion (US$432 million) to finance the construction of rental apartments for low-income and middle-class households in four locations of the capital.

Ten apartment towers would be constructed in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta for Rp 3.5 trillion, two towers in Pasar Rumput, South Jakarta, for Rp 1.1 trillion, three in Pasar Minggu in South Jakarta for Rp 800 billion and another two in Pondok Kelapa in East Jakarta for Rp 200 billion.

All apartments, except those in Kemayoran, are constructed for low-income households and people evicted from state lands, the ministry’s director for apartments, Christ Robert Marbun, said on Tuesday.

Construction on the projects in Pasar Rumput, Pasar Minggu and Pondok Kelapa will begin in August and is expected to finish in 2018.

Meanwhile, the quality of the apartments in Kemayoran would be equal to the three-star hotel standards and were expected to be completed in October 2017. They would initially be used to accommodate sportspeople competing in the 2018 Asian Games, he said.

“After the Asian Games, the government will convert the buildings into low-cost rental apartments affordable for low-to-middle-income earners as well as civil servants who cannot afford to buy houses yet,” he said. (sha/bbn)
