View all search resultshe National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is pushing for new substances to be included in the 2009 Narcotics Law to help prevent the spread of drugs in Indonesia, an official said on Tuesday.
Forty-four new drugs or “new psychoactive substances” are said to be spreading in the country. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) had recorded 643 new psychoactive substances globally, BNN spokesman Sr. Cmr. Slamet Pribadi said.
“The BNN wants the new psychoactive substances to be listed in the law on narcotics so that they will not be misused,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.
The Health Ministry issued a ministerial decree in 2014 on changes to narcotic classifications, which included 18 new narcotic substances. The remaining 26 new psychoactive substances, however, have not been listed as narcotics.
The BNN held a joint meeting with the Health Ministry, National Police, academics, health practitioners and chemists last month to follow up on the matter, which resulted in the formation of a joint evaluation team, Slamet said.
The team will monitor trends surrounding the new substances in the world narcotics market, including those that had entered Indonesia and those that had the possibility of spreading.
The stakeholders would gather again later this month to finalize the team, which will be coordinated by the Health Ministry, Slamet added. (rin)
