wo draft laws, both of which are related to sex crimes –regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) No. 1/2016 amending the 2002 Child Protection Law and the sexual violence eradication and sexual violence eradication bill – will be deliberated separately, a lawmaker has said.
The Perppu will be deliberated by a special committee comprising lawmakers from Commission III overseeing human rights and security affairs and Commission VIII overseeing religious and social affairs, Didik Mukrianto, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, said on Monday.
“Meanwhile, the sexual violence eradication bill will be debated by Commission VIII,” said Didik, citing the results of a meeting with the House’s deliberative body on Monday.
The Perppu was introduced by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as part of efforts to protect children from sexual abuse, while the sexual violence eradication bill was initiated by the House.
Didik said the House was paying serious attention to the Perppu on child protection and that as such, lawmakers would study the legal perspective of the regulation, which stipulates stern punishments for perpetrators of child abuse.
Under the Perppu, as well as receiving prison sentences, child abusers are threatened with additional punishments including chemical castration, announcement of their identity and having an electronic surveillance chip implanted in their bodies.
In a House plenary meeting on Monday, House Deputy Speaker Taufik Kurniawan read out a letter from President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, which was received on June 14, in connection with the submission of Perppu No. 1/2016 on child protection. (bbn)
