avoc has again spoiled Indonesian soccer, this time affecting a match between Jakarta’s Persija and Palembang Sriwijaya FC, leaving five police officers requiring treatment for serious injuries and one other in critical condition.
The riot engulfed Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta on Friday after Sriwijaya FC scored a goal against the home team. In reaction, a Persija supporter jumped into the arena, prompting his fellow supporters to do so as well, and subsequently breaking fences in sectors 13 and 14 of the stadium.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comm. Awi Setiyono said at least six police officers had fallen on Friday night after being attacked by Jakmania, the notorious Persija fan club.
"All of them are being treated at the Polri [National Police] hospital. Brigadier Hanawiah is in critical condition after sustaining blows to his head from blunt objects. Three officers sustained serious injuries and two others are in intensive care," he said as quoted by tempo.co on Saturday.
Aside from attacking police officers, the angry supporters damaged a black Terano sports utility vehicle belonging to the Jakarta Police, along with two police cars, five police motorbikes, three motorcycles owned by police officers and one uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit.
As a result of the riot, Awi continued, the police detained 155 Jakmania members, with 14 of them under arrest the Central Jakarta Police station. Investigations are continuing, and the police are expected to name suspects soon. (ags)
