bamboo raft, locally known as getek, capsized, resulting in the death of one passenger on Sunday in a river in Pasar Ikan, North Jakarta.

“It’s true that bamboo raft overturned this morning. A man was killed in the accident,” Penjaringan Police chief Comr. Bismo Teguh confirmed as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.

Bismo further explained that the raft was transporting 15 people to attend an event at Luar Batang Mosque, which is located on the other side of the river.

However, he added, the raft could only safely carry a maximum 10 people. Hence, the raft had been operating at overcapacity.

A 55-year old man died in the accident and 14 others — including an 8-month-old — were taken to the Atmajaya Hospital, North Jakarta, he said.
