"It's been indicated that this is a syndicate between Medan and Jakarta," Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said on Monday, as quoted by tempo.co.
It was believed the drugs were sent via couriers from Medan to reach the hands of OD who resided in Jakarta, Awi said, adding that the products were then distributed by the suspect to dealers around the capital city. The transactions between the relevant perpetrators were done anonymously, the police spokesperson added.
"I don't know the people who send me the items, the names constantly change," OD said, adding that he had communicated by Blackberry Messenger. The police are still pursuing another suspect, known by initials VL, who is allegedly a drug producer in Medan. According to findings of investigation, transactions are usually conducted in Tangerang, Banten province.
The police have confiscated 14,981 ecstasy pills and 297.21 grams of methamphetamines. The suspect has admitted to have been operating for two months, while the police claims he has been a distributor for four months. OD reportedly received Rp 5 million (US$378) for every 5,000 pills, with as many as four transactions being uncovered by authorities.
OD was detained by the police on Aug. 18 in his rented apartment at the Modern Golf Tower Hijau. "Since the beginning, the suspect has been a target in our operations," Awi said. OD could be charged with violating articles 112 and 114 of Narcotics Law No. 35/2009. The suspect could face life imprisonment and a maximum fine of Rp 10 million. (liz/evi)
