he open debate between Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and deputy gubernatorial candidate Sandiaga Uno has continued with Ahok saying that Sandiaga's applying for the tax amnesty indicated that his political rival has evaded paying taxes in the past.
“The tax amnesty is for people who cannot prove that they have paid their taxes. In this case, Pak Sandiaga applied for [the tax amnesty]. This proves that Pak Sandiaga has previously evaded paying taxes,” he said with a laugh in Jakarta on Monday as reported by kompas.com.
On Sunday, Sandiaga challenged Ahok and members of his family to apply for the reverse burden of proof, claiming that relatives of the governor could have benefited from policies he has made as governor.
Commenting on Sandiaga’s call, Ahok said that people who did not hold public positions were not required to reveal their private wealth, but only needed to report taxes they had paid to the state. He said the tax amnesty was a facility for people to clear their unpaid taxes in the past.
Ahok said he had reported his wealth to the Corruption Eradication Comission (KPK) regularly. (bbn)
