Former Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has thrown his support behind gubernatorial candidate Pramono Anung and his running mate Rano Karno, saying he will assist in the pair’s campaign to win the November election.
Ahok said his leadership position at the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) required him to support the pair in full.
“I am responsible for helping Mas Pram and Bang Rano clinch victory,” Ahok said on Thursday during a meeting with the candidate pair, as quoted in a statement, calling Pramono and Rano by their nicknames.
The three met at a park near the Semanggi Interchange, an overpass approved and built during Ahok’s tenure as Jakarta governor to reduce traffic congestion in the area.
Ahok became governor of Jakarta in November 2014 when his predecessor, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, was elected the country’s president.
He said the overpass was the result of a cooperation agreement between the city administration and the private sector and had not used any funds from the regional budget.
Ahok expressed hope that Pramono and Rano would continue the same infrastructure development model for the benefit of Jakartans.
