T

o tackle the issue of illegal levies, the government is set to establish a task force, Saber Pungli, at local administrations in a move to step up measures against harmful practices that may damage public service deliveries in the country, an official has said.

Saber Pungli task force chief Comr. Gen. Dwi Priyatno said that in accordance to Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 87/2016 on the establishment of Saber Pungli task forces, the new units would be placed under the Government Internal Oversight Body (APIP) within local administrations.

The local units would be required to coordinate and communicate intensively with the central Saber Pungli task force established under the Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Ministry in Jakarta, he went on.

"The units can also coordinate with related institutions, which are similar to the central Saber Pungli task force, to ease their functions in intelligence and illegal levy prevention and law enforcement,” Dwi told the journalists on Monday.

He said the Saber Pungli task force was currently mulling over the details of the local units such as on their organizational tasks and working procedures. The units were expected to be established within a week, he went on.

The government formed the Saber Pungli task force to gather reports from the public on corruption in public service deliveries and to take action to eradicate the crime.

Eradicating illegal levies is one of five priorities in Indonesia’s legal reform, which include the eradication of smuggling, the acceleration of driving license issuance services, prison relocations and patent and design service improvements. (ebf)
