he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has warned rector candidates at universities to avoid making political maneuvers, including establishing campaign teams, during rector elections as it could lead to corrupt practices.
KPK commissioner Laode Syarif said on Friday that rector elections should not be made similar to regional elections, in which vote buying and other corrupt practices are rampant.
"Establishing campaign teams may lead to corrupt practices. My message to all rector candidates is to avoid vote buying," he said at the Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry's office in Jakarta on Friday after discussing problems in rector elections.
He said as the country's academic front-liners, universities should promote clean governance. "Professors are not politicians. If you want to become a rector, you only need to be intelligent and have a good vision," he added.
The KPK, the ministry, the State Civilian Bureaucracy Commission (KASN) and Ombudsman RI jointly established a team to review regulations on rector elections, as the current mechanism has been susceptible to illicit practices.
Ombudsman had previously received multiple complaints saying that rector elections in seven state universities allegedly contained irregularities.
Meanwhile, deputy chairman of KASN Irham Dilmy acknowledged that his commission was currently lacking supervision over rector affairs, as the prevailing regulation only allowed them to supervise lecturers and other departments under rectors.
"However, rectors are basically lecturers that have an additional position," he said. (fac/bbn)
