boat ferrying at least 18 passengers in Takalar regency in South Sulawesi sank on Friday at about 3:30 p.m. local time near Tanakeke Island in the regency, killing two people and leaving one in critical condition.

The other 15 passengers have been found and rescued.

Takalar Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Iskandar said Friday he could not confirm the number of passengers, but they had found 18. “We’re still searching,” he said.

He said the boat was departing from Old Harbor in Takalar at about 2:30 p.m. to Tanakeke Island. About an hour into the trip, the boat was hit by a high wave and water entered the boat, breaking the vessel. All passengers fell into the sea.

An officer with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency in Makassar, Rizki Yudha Pahlawan, said the western and northern coastal areas of South Sulawesi were experiencing extreme weather.

“We are currently in peak rainy season and experiencing extreme weather,” he said. Rainy season has seen intense rainfall and strong winds. He said the waves in the Makassar Strait have been taller lately, reaching 2.5 meters to 4 meters. (evi)
