hirty primary school and five junior high school buildings have been inundated by floodwaters in Bekasi regency, West Java, after rainfall intensified two days ago, according to the regency’s education agency. As a result of this, some schools have been forced to temporarily close down.
The school buildings are located in areas prone to flooding such as Kaduwaringin, Cabangbungin, Muaragembong, Tarumajaya, Babelan, Cibitung and Cikarang Utara.
“Floodwaters also inundated other public facilities such as houses of worship,” Bekasi Education Agency head Aspuri said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday.
Overflowing rivers and poor drainage systems are blamed for the flooding, Aspuri said, adding that the inundated schools could do little to prevent the water from inundating classrooms.
“It is quite impossible to get water out of the school buildings because the water will only recede when the volume of the river decreases,” Aspuri said, adding that in several districts, the water level reached 1.5 meters in height, forcing schools to close down.
Some schools moved their classes to unaffected buildings so that students could continue with their studies. (saf/evi)
