he Central Java Police are set to launch an operation to raise awareness about traffic safety following the release of data that show at least 12 people die every day in traffic accidents in the province.
In 2016, 4,424 people died in traffic accidents, Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Condro Kirono said on Wednesday, adding that prevention methods were urgently needed.
“We’re holding an operation to help reduce traffic violations,” he said at the operation launch in Semarang.
The police are coordinating with various stakeholders including schools to disseminate information on traffic safety in the operation.

Condro also urged the Central Java administration to repair damaged roads to prevent traffic accidents and to provide better traffic signs.
The national figure for road deaths stands at 71 per day. (rin)
