akarta gubernatorial candidate Anies Baswedan filed a report with the Jakarta Police on Thursday against a man identified as Cyril Raoul Hakim for alleged defamation against the former education minister.

Anies’ lawyer Yupen Hadi said on Thursday the reported individual had made negative statements about his client through his twitter account @chicohakim on Feb. 27.

In his tweets, Cyril suggested that Anies was having affairs with several women, including one living in the United States, Yupen said. Cyril also reportedly mocked Anies for not having gone on the minor pilgrimage, or umrah, prior to the election runoff, making his supporters think that he was a phony Muslim.

“We are worried that this blasphemy would be taken for granted by the public, especially Jakarta voters. The police should investigate whether there are particular motives behind this defamation,” he demanded.

He said that the misleading information could damage Anies’ reputation as well as his candidacy for the Jakarta governor seat. Yupen claimed that Cyril had violated Articles 310 and 311 of the Criminal Code on defamation as well as Article 45 Paragraph 1 of the Information and Electronic Transactions Law. (dea/idb)
