he Jakarta Bina Marga road agency has begun constructing the Kartini underpass at a major intersection of Jalan Metro Pondok Indah in order to tackle traffic congestion in the upscale area.
The construction of the underpass, which was slated to begin in January, aims to reduce severe traffic congestion along the Pondok Indah-Ciputat and Fatmawati-Jalan Ciputat Raya routes.
The Agency’s intersection construction division head Hananto Krisna said that the underpass could expedite traffic from north to south and support Transjakarta corridor 8 which connects Lebak Bulus terminal to Harmoni bus stop.
“Rp 90 billion (US$6.7 million) has been allocated for the construction, which is targeted to be completed by December 2017,” Hananto said Wednesday as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

The underpass will have two 400-meter-long lanes with a width of 10 meters, Hananto added.
Last year, the Jakarta administration allocated Rp 1.8 trillion (US$129.9 million) to develop five overpasses and four underpasses this year on roads and rail crossings prone to congestion.
Bina Marga has said that all nine projects were slated for completion in 2017 with a multi-year contract. (wnd)
