T

he independency of the election commission and supervisory agency was called into question following a private meeting with the campaign team of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, who is seeking reelection.

Another election contender, Anies Baswedan, voiced concern about the closed-door meeting, saying that it could be a problem, while an organization called Advokat Cinta Tanah Air (ACTA) went further and filed an ethics violation report with the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) on Friday.

ACTA chairman Hisar Tambunan told reporters that his organization considered  Thursday’s meeting a serious ethics violation as there was a possibility that the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta), Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and Ahok’s campaign team discussed, among other things,  plans to “engineer” the final voter list (DPT) in the runoff.

“As we know, Ahok claimed in the first round of election that his supporters could not vote for various reasons. We’re worried that a plan to engineer the voters list in the second round was among things discussed in the meeting,” he told reporters after filling the ethics violation report.

KPU Jakarta head Sumarno and Bawaslu Jakarta head Mimah Susanti met an invitation from Ahok’s campaign team to meet on Thursday. To reporters, Sumarno said he had been invited to discuss mechanisms of the runoff election.

Sumarno was widely criticized previously for meeting Anies during a revote at a South Jakarta polling station on Feb. 19.
