T

he trend among millennials to visit ecotourist destinations is expected to broaden opportunities for restroom and sanitation businesses in hundreds of Indonesia’s natural tourist attractions.

NGO Indonesia Toilet Association (ATI) president Naning Adiwoso said millennials, those aged 18 to 35, in urban areas were mainly living in vertical houses like apartments.

“Those young people are going to the nature destinations to get fresh air, however there are no good quality sanitation services at those destinations,” she said during the opening ceremony of South East Asia Toilet (SEAT) Conference, Expo Clean and Expo Laundry 2017 in Jakarta on Thursday.

To improve the quality of restrooms in ecotourist destinations, ATI is cooperating with the Environment and Forestry Ministry, Transportation Ministry and Tourism Ministry to provide public restrooms in ecotourist destinations.

“Later on, we want to invite business players to develop and manage restrooms, as well as the sanitation services in natural tourist spots,” Naning said.

Through this cooperation, ATI hopes to increase the government’s concern for public restrooms and sanitation as it affects tourists’ opinion and interest toward a tourist area. “People look down on restrooms,” Naning said. “Restrooms are often looked over with regard to how important they are in tourism,” she added.
