P

ublic Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the government constructed 43 low-cost apartment towers for students of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in 18 provinces between 2015 and 2016.

“We hope the move helps students studying at pesantren,” said Basuki in Jakarta as reported by tempo.co on Wednesday, adding that the construction of such residential facilities was evidence of the government’s commitment to developing Islamic boarding schools.

The towers consist of 1,290 apartments for students of Islamic boarding schools Darul Ulum in Semarang, Al Hidayah in Banyumas, Central Java, Nahdlatul Ulum in Maros, South Sulawesi and Darul Hikmah in Tulungagung, East Java.

Basuki said the government had allocated Rp 181.65 billion (US$13.66. million) to develop 19 more towers, including in Pidie Jaya, Aceh; Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra; Padang Pariaman in West Sumatra; Lampung Timur in Lampung; Ogan Komering Ulu Timur in South Sumatra; in Tasikmalaya, West Java; Magelang and Semarang in Central Java; Ende in East Nusa Tenggara; Nganjuk, Pasuruan in East Java in Sintang, West Kalimantan; Hulu Sungai Selatan in East Kalimantan; and Bone in Southeast Sulawesi.

He added that another 40 towers would be built in 2019.

Each tower costs between Rp 9 billion and Rp 10 billion and can accommodate about 216 students. (bbn)
