T

he body of First Brig. Imam Gilang Adinata, one of three police officers killed in twin bombings in East Jakarta on Wednesday, has been buried in his hometown in Klaten, Central Java.

He was laid to rest at the Gedong public cemetery in Srago Gede, Mojayan subdistrict, Klaten, at around 6:20 p.m. local time on Thursday.

Central Java Police human resources director Sr. Comr. Edy Murbowo led the burial ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of police and military personnel.

Jakarta Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Suntana and acting Klaten regent Sri Mulyani attended the procession. Hundreds of people, including Gilang’s family members and friends, also saw off their loved one to his final resting place.

“Gilang has become a hero and good example for us. This incident should not make us afraid and, instead, it should serve as a lesson that spurs us to be brave to fight against terrorism. We must not be afraid of terrorism,” said Suntana.

Gilang was guarding a pre-Ramadhan event when two suicide bombers attacked the Kampung Melayu bus station.

Rohmat Sugiarto, one of Gilang’s uncles, said his nephew had dreamed of becoming a police officer since he was a child. He joined the National Police in 2013 and was stationed in Jakarta.

“Hopefully, he died in khusnul khotimah [with blessings ahead] because he died when he was on duty,” said Rohmat. (mos/ebf)
