‘Tiger team’ launched to fight street crime in North Jakarta

The North Jakarta Police has formed a special unit called the "Tiger Team", a quick-response team which is responsible for combating street crime in its jurisdiction, following a wave of street crimes across Jakarta ahead of Ramadan.

he North Jakarta Police has formed a special unit called the "Tiger Team", a quick-response team which is responsible for combating street crime in its jurisdiction, following a wave of street crimes across Jakarta ahead of Ramadhan.

The team consists of 20 police officers who will be equipped with long-barreled firearms and bulletproof vests when patrolling specific areas in North Jakarta, said North Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Dwiyono.

The new squad will patrol these areas in North Jakarta, which are prone to street crime, using special security motorcycles and cars.

"The team will focus on taking action against all form of crimes that threaten residents," Dwiyono said on Sunday as quoted by Kompas.com, adding that the new squad were also in charge of monitoring the distribution of alcohol and narcotics.

Special units to combat street crimes were also introduced recently by at least two other police precincts in Greater Jakarta, with the formation of the East Jakarta Police's Rajawali Task Force and the Depok Police's Jaguar Team. (cal/ipa)
