he Yogyakarta chapter of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has reported a significant decrease in blood supply in the province due to the lower number of blood donors during the Idul Fitri holiday period.
“The number of blood donors has dropped by around 50 percent compared to normal days, while there is demand for blood every day,” PMI Yogyakarta spokesperson Warjiyani said on Tuesday, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Warjiyani added the Red Cross would prioritize the supply for hospitals that filed a request for blood first. “The available supply is still sufficient for the demand during the Idul Fitri holiday.”

As of Tuesday, Yogyakarta city has 278 bags of blood, while Kulon Progo, Gunung Kidul and Bantul regencies have 107, 45 and 43 respectively.
The provincial Red Cross, in cooperation with Red Cross representatives in the cities and regencies, would proactively approach donors to ask for blood. In return, the Red Cross would offer packages of food, Warjiyani said.
Blood supplies have also declined in several other places, such as Jambi and Jakarta, since the beginning of the Ramadhan fasting month (kuk/bbs).
