P

ublicly listed telecommunications company PT XL Axiata has recorded a 218 percent increase in data traffic during this year’s Idul Fitri holiday period from last year’s.

“Data services have dominated the increase in traffic. Customers were more active in accessing social media services, which have been replacing conventional telecommunication services,” said PT XL Axiata director and chief service management officer Yessie D. Yosetya as reported by kompas.com.

He added that the company had prepared for the increase in data traffic by doubling its network capacity, among other measures.

XL Axiata reported that average daily data traffic from June 20 to 27 reached more than 4,020 terabytes, which compares to normal daily data traffic of 3,600 TB.

Access to social media platforms like Facebook increased by more than 50 percent, to Instagram by more than 20 percent, and to YouTube by more than 17 percent. Meanwhile, access to navigation services like Google Maps and Waze increased by more than 135 percent.

Meanwhile, access to instant messaging, voice, video and video call services (WhatsApp, FB Messenger and LINE) increased more than 46 percent. They replaced the function of short message service (SMS) that were still used by many customers last year.

XL Axiata recorded a decrease in data traffic in Greater Jakarta but saw an increase in Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java. (dis/bbn)
