Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has urged Jakartans to remain calm in the face of recent acts of terror in the capital.

“Don’t be afraid! We cannot be afraid,” he said at City Hall on Wednesday.

The latest threat in the capital thought to be made by terrorists was a letter sent to the South Jakarta Police station in Kebayoran Lama stating that Jakarta would be turned into another Marawi.

Marawi is a Philippine city where warfare is raging between Maute, which is associated with the Islamic State (IS) movement, and the Philippine army.

Djarot said the threat was not an act of terror but a challenge for Jakarta.

He advised Jakartans to exercise caution with anything suspicious.

“But don’t be too worried and afraid,” he said.

Regarding terrorism threats, Djarot has instructed the heads of districts and subdistricts and the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) to monitor all areas in the capital. (dra/ika)
