Setya sends letter to House, asks not to remove him as speaker Suspected: House of Representatives Speaker and graft suspect Setya Novanto is escorted to attend questioning at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) office in South Jakarta on Nov. 21. (The Jakarta Post/Wendra Ajistyatama)

A

midst growing speculation that Setya Novanto could be removed from his position both as Golkar chairman and the House of Representatives speaker, it was revealed that the graft suspect has sent one letter to his party and one to the House detailing his opinion about his positions in the two jobs.

In the letter addressed to leaders of the House, Setya called on all lawmakers and members of the House’s ethics council (MKD) “not to hold any meeting aimed at removing him” both as the speaker and a lawmaker.

“I hope all House leaders can give me an opportunity to prove that I am not involved [in the e-ID graft case],” he said in the letter, which was signed on Tuesday.

In the letter to Golkar, Setya emphasized that “there had not been any order to remove him from his position” as the party’s chairman. He also stated in the letter that it was him that had appointed politician Idrus Marham to serve as acting chairman shortly after he was detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Both of the letters, handwritten and signed by Setya himself, have gone viral among journalists’ WhatsApp groups.

Setya was picked up by the KPK and was sent to the commission’s detention facility on Monday evening after physicians at Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital, where he was treated for injuries from a car accident, confirmed he had recovered.

Setya has dodged several KPK summonses for questioning on his alleged involvement in the e-ID graft case. (ebf)
