erman healthcare company Fresenius Kabi AG has kicked off production of its newest plant manufacturing ampoules and vials in Cikarang, West Java, on Thursday.
The plant runs under PT ETHICA Industri Farmasi, a joint venture between the German firm and local firm SOHO Global Health. Fresenius hopes to have it become the ampoule and vial production center for its market in ASEAN.
The German firm's other two plants are in Pulogadung, East Jakarta, and Padalarang, West Java.
The Pulogadung plant will be gradually relocated to the Cikarang plant.
Fresenius Kabi Asian region president Gerrit Steen said the plant's products would be distributed to the local market for two years before being exported to other ASEAN countries.
"With annual growth of more than 10 percent in the pharmaceutical industry and improved investment climate in the past few years, Indonesia has become the best choice to invest and become the production center of ASEAN," he told the audience in the opening ceremony on Thursday.
The ceremony was attended by Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Health Minister Nila Moeloek.
The company invested Rp 1 trillion (US$738.9 million) for the plant, which is located over 4.3 hectares of land and has an annual capacity of 130 million ampoules. (bbn)
