akarta Governor Anies Baswedan visited an underpass at Dukuh Atas in Karet Tengsin, Central Jakarta, which was heavily inundated following heavy rainfall on Monday.
He said he discovered that several water pumps for the underpass had been broken since October.
The underpass was reportedly inundated by flood waters that reached nearly 1 meter in height, forcing motorists to find an alternative route and causing heavy congestion.
The flooding started at 2:00 p.m., when heavy rain and strong winds struck Jakarta.
The water had receded by the time Anies reached the location, kompas.com reported.
The governor then checked a nearby pumping station, where an operator reported that only two out of the six pumps were operating properly.
“We will soon follow up [on the matter with a report],” Anies said.
The operator, Mulyadi, said that he first reported the broken pumps on Oct. 22, but received no response from the city administration.
The Jakarta Mitigation Agency reported that at 4 p.m., motorists were once again able to drive through the underpass. (fac)
