series of hydrometeorological disasters have hit Java Island in recent days, killing dozens of people and displacing thousands more as extreme weather continues to sweep across the country.
The latest incident occurred in West Bandung regency, West Java, where heavy rain triggered a landslide that hit the villages of Cibenda and Sirnagalih. At least 30 houses and two musholla (Muslim prayer rooms) were destroyed, while two villagers were seriously injured in the incident.
Ten people went missing following the incident. As of Wednesday afternoon, search and rescue personnel had found four of them dead.
“The steep cliff hindered the joint team’s search for the victims,” the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement.
The team called off the search on Wednesday afternoon after detecting new ground motion that officials said could trigger another landslide. The operation was to resume when conditions improved.
At least 527 residents of Cibenda and Sirnagalih took shelter at a nearby elementary school and a sports hall, where authorities were disbursing humanitarian aid.
