akarta will soon have a regulation to ensure that tourism stays in line with religious tenets under a planned gubernatorial decree on halal tourism.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno revealed on Wednesday that the city administration was currently preparing the decree, while aiming to create more jobs in the capital.

“The decree is nearly done. Today’s discussion is held to discuss what needs to be included in the decree,” Sandiaga said on the sidelines of a forum discussion group on halal tourism, which was held in City Hall on Wednesday.

The decree would regulate, among others, which destinations that could be categorized as halal, human resources and working units in charge of developing halal tourism, Sandiaga explained.

International market research firm Euromonitor International said last year that halal tourism businesses had grown rapidly in recent years and the industry would likely experience a boom in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) data shows a steady growth of Muslim tourists annually, from 171 million in 2015 to 121 million in 2016.

Sandiaga aims to capitalize on the growing halal tourism sector and attract 1 million Muslim tourists to Jakarta in the next five years.
