ome women jostled with hundreds other were reportedly fainted, while lining up for free staple food packages during a pesta rakyat (people's party) at the National Monument (Monas) on Saturday.

The event was held by Forum Untukmu Indonesia.

"I saw some women faint. The weather is super hot, so they probably couldn't stand the heat," said a visitor named Ismi, wartakota.tribunnews.com reports.

Ismi criticised the committee for failing to anticipate the high number of visitors. As there were no medical personnel available at the event, other visitors helped to move the women who had fainted to a less crowded area.

The event's committee had reportedly distributed vouchers that could be exchanged for either one kilogram of rice, three packages of instant noodles or one litre of cooking oil.

The event, which affected traffic in the surrounding area, also left plastic waste scattered around Monas.

"I see no trash bin around here. I'm just doing what everyone else is," said a visitor who wished to remain anonymous. (vla)
