Thousand Islands is set to dispatch a large vessel and two medium-sized boats to pick up waste on the island.
Environment subgency head Yusen Hardiman said on Monday that the vessel would be parked on Payung Island. The two smaller boats will pick up trash on Tidung Island and transfer the waste to the large vessel.
"The large waste vessel can carry up to 90 tons of waste, while the small ones can only accommodate 10 tons," he said as quoted by kompas.com.
"I'm optimistic that Tidung Island will be clean within a month," he added.
Two waste vessels had been deployed earlier, each of which with a 20-ton capacity. Yusen said the two vessels should go back and forth from the Thousand Islands at least four times a month, hence the additional boats.
"We will add more waste boats to speed up the cleaning," he said.(vla)
