On Friday morning, a member of the Navy who was on patrol in Pondok Dayung saw the crocodile swimming along the coastline, the Navy's Western Region Fleet Command (Koarmabar) spokesperson Lt. Col. Agung Nugroho said, adding that the Navy member had shot the crocodile.

"People should not be worried since officials from Ancol have implemented tight security measures in the area," Agung said. "The Navy will continue combing through the area to ensure the crocodile does not re-emerge."

Ancol's nearby amusement park is popular during Idul Fitri, when Jakartans spend their holiday along the Ancol coast.

"The Navy member proceeded to hunt the animal with a long-range firearm," he said as quoted by kompas.com on Friday. "He shot the animal in the back of its head, it then went under the water."

The Navy then combed the area surrounding the dock. However, the crocodile has not been seen since, Agung said.

The crocodile was first discovered swimming toward Ancol beach on Thursday. A video showing the crocodile emerging from the water went viral on social media.

According to Agung, the crocodile that was shot on Friday was the same animal that was found the day before.

Ancol Dreamland Park's corporate communications officer, Rika Lestari, said the beach pool area had been properly secured.

"In addition to nets, we have deployed life guards on 24-hour patrol to keep watch over the beach area," she said. "They will keep coordinating with the elite frogmen unit in Pondok Dayung." (rfa)
