anten Governor Wahidin Halim claims the Jakarta administration has failed to provide a sufficient grant for Banten, one of the capital’s satellite cities, making it hard for the province to execute programs, such as one centered on flood mitigation.

The administration has allocated funds for members of the Greater Jakarta Coordinating Board comprising Bogor, Depok, Bekasi and Cianjur in West Java and Tangerang in Banten.

The grants are distributed to help the satellite cities mitigate flooding, improve education, health, sanitation, waste management and synchronize spatial planning.

Wahidin said the capital had only allocated around Rp 100 billion (US$6.9 million) to three areas in the province, namely South Tangerang, Tangerang city and Tangerang regency, an amount he deemed insufficient to execute various programs.

Wahidin said Tangerang dealt with floods because vacant land had been illegally occupied by residents.

“Some vacant land has been developed illegally into residential areas,” Wahidin said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

Wahidin added that the flood mitigation project might cost around Rp 2.5 trillion as the province would need to dredge rivers, develop lakes and reservoirs and carry out reclamation.

Meanwhile, Anies denied the statement, saying the administration had allocated sufficient funds for its satellite cities.

He said the administration had allocated Rp 269 billion for the 12 members of the coordinating board this year. (cal)
