The Aceh administration plans to vaccinate 1.5 million children aged 9 months to 15 years against measles and rubella across the province as part of the nationwide measles-rubella (MR) immunization campaign.

The program will be held across the country’s westernmost province on Aug. 1 in order to cut the transmission chain of measles and rubella.

The Health Ministry has set a target of 95 percent MR immunization coverage in the second phase of the program, held in August to September.

Rubella causes a mild fever and a skin rash, and can result in miscarriage, stillbirth and birth defects if pregnant women contract it.

The immunization drive is also aimed at encouraging parents to make sure their children are vaccinated for the sake of their health, Abdul Fatah, Aceh’s head of disease prevention and control body, said on Thursday.

“Immunization is a child’s right,” he said.

Aceh is among the four provinces that has had low immunization coverage, along with East Nusa Tenggara, North Kalimantan and Papua.

Many people are reluctant to have their children immunized over concerns of whether the vaccine is halal and whether it is safe.

Meanwhile, deputy chairman of the Aceh Ulema Council (MPU) Faisal Ali said the council supported the government program and urged people to have their children vaccinated.

“Immunization is important for the sake of the future generation’s health,” he said. (stu/rin)
