T

he Jakarta Police’s CCTV cameras used in the electronic traffic law enforcement (ETLE) system have caught 2,438 motorists violating traffic rules, after 26 days of the system's trial run.

Traffic police law enforcement division head Sr. Adj. Comr. Budiyanto said the cameras caught the most number of violators on Friday.

"On Oct. 26 we found the most violations, amounting to 483 motorists. On Oct. 24, 378 violators were caught," Budiyanto said on Sunday as reported by kompas.com.

He said the cameras caught both motorcyclists and drivers committing violations.

He said the violators were caught thanks to the automatic license plate recognition CCTV cameras installed on Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Medan Merdeka.

"Most of the violators had black license plates [private vehicles], comprising 1,234 violators, followed by vehicles with yellow license plates [public transportation vehicles],  which accounted for 288 violators," Budiyanto said.

He said violators, however, had not been ticketed as the system was undergoing a trial run.

He said police would record and evaluate gathered data before ticketing offenders starting on Nov.1.

"The system will be effective on Nov. 1. We’ll continue to inform people about this for a few more days," Budiyanto said. (ami)
