akarta Governor Anies Baswedan has said that the reason why he has yet to sign a gubernatorial decree on limiting the use of plastic in Jakarta is because it requires major revisions.
“The content of the decree still requires many revisions. It’s not just about signing it, the content need to be revised,” Anies said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Anies said the drafted regulation had yet to propose a substitute to plastics.
“Housewives will face difficulties if we do not prepare alternatives [to plastic],” the former education minister said as quoted by tempo.co.
Many environmentalists have urged the administration to introduce a regulation that limits the use of plastic in the city, which produces over 7,000 tons of waste daily. Of the total waste production, 14 percent is plastic waste and 10 percent comes from single-use plastic bags.
Jakarta Environment Agency head Isnawa Adji previously said that the regulation on it had been drafted and only needed a signature from the governor.
Should the decree pass, residents would be given a six-month grace period to adjust to the law, after which violators would be punished. Isnawa said his office would cooperate with city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya to distribute more environmentally friendly plastic bags to vendors at traditional markets. (fac)
