esides wanting to champion the 2019 SMBC Singapore Open, Thai golfer Jazz Janewattananond has set his eyes on qualifying for the 148th annual British Open, which will be held at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland in July.

The Singapore Open will act as a qualifier for the major tournament, with the top four players in the final leaderboard securing a spot in the “grand slam” of golf.

With that in mind, 23-year-old Jazz, who is currently ranked 111th, gave his all at the Sentosa Golf Club to finish round three of the 2019 SMBC Singapore Open carding six-under-par, making him the best player with the best record on Saturday’s round.

He trailed behind Japan’s Yoshinori Fujimoto, who now leads the clubhouse by carding 13-under-par 200, in second place. Jazz shares the spot with Matthew Fitzpatrick with one shot adrift from Fujimoto.

In addition to being a major golfing event, the British Open has a special place in Jazz’s heart as he feels that he gained a lot from debuting at the tournament last year.

“I made my major debut at The Open last year. It was a really eye-opening experience for me. I think that is also the reason why my game has improved so much. I learned a lot that week. I hit a lot of low shots that week and that’s something I haven’t done much here before,” he said.

Opportunities are still open for other golfers to lift the 2019 SMBC Singapore Open’s trophy as the gap in the current leaderboard is not very wide.

The highest-ranking players in the course, Paul Casey of England, South Korean Doyeob Mun and Thai Chapchai Nirat, are lurking in the top three with 10-under-par 203. (nkn)
