ersonnel on a Maritime Security Board (Bakamla) patrol vessel have arrested three young suspects on board a ship who were allegedly attempting to smuggle fuel in the Indonesia-Singapore maritime border area on Sunday.

The personnel arrested the three on board the Indonesian flagged tanker Maxima Pratama Jakarta when the vessel was transferring 18 tons of fuel to a nameless ship.

“The nameless ship had people of school age as its captain and crew,” Bakamla’s operation and training director First Adm. Nursyawal Embun told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

The three were junior high school students aged 15 or 16 years old. The ship tried to evade the patrol vessel but it caught up with them in Barelang waters, Batam, Riau Islands. “The ship will be taken to Batam,” he said.

Bakamla will charge the suspects under Law No. 22/2001 on oil and gas as well as the law on shipping because the ships did not have a license to distribute fuel.

The authorities promised to abide by the law on child protection while handling the three suspects.

“They are still on board the ship along with the fuel as evidence. We will pay attention to the law on child protection,” he said. (swa)
