uthorities removed a nest of a Vespa affinis type of hornet on Jl. Swadaya Raya, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, on Wednesday night, following public complaints about the insect.
"The removal was a follow-up to public complaints about the large Vespa affinis hornets nest on a tree by the road, which fretted residents who used the road," Duren Sawit Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) head Andik Sukaryanto said, kompas.com reported.
The nest removal by a team consisting of officials from the Public Order Agency, the Fire and Rescue Agency and park officers took about two hours.
Several studies have reported that the Vespa affinis sting can cause death.
In Indonesia, fatalities involving the insect have been reported in Klaten, Central Java, within the last two years.
Klaten Fire and Rescue Agency head Nur Khodik at the time said that a person got stung by the hornet could die if not treated within 24 hours.
"This type of hornet is very dangerous. Seven people [in Klaten] died because of the hornet's sting. Two people died in 2017 and five died in 2018," he said on Jan. 1, kompas.com reported. (sau)
