ount Merapi in Central Java has shown significant volcanic activity for the second time in November, as it spewed volcanic ash on Sunday morning.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Agus Wibowo said the volcano spewed ash at 10:46 a.m. local time, reaching 1,000 meters in height.

“According to the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center [PVMBG], the ash was carried by wind to the west and caused several parts of Banyubiru village [in Magelang, Central Java] to get covered in thin ash,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

According to observations by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) using a Himawari satellite, the ash was no longer detectable as of 1 p.m. local time.

The center also recorded 34 local and volcanic earthquakes on Nov. 15 due to heightened activity at Mt. Merapi.

While the ash did not cover big cities around the volcano, such as Central Java’s Surakarta and Yogyakarta, the center had warned residents to be on alert of ash rain from further volcanic activity.
