The provincial capital of Bengkulu was hit on Friday by a 6.0-magnitude intraslab earthquake that shook walls and collapsed roofs, jolting residents awake and out of their homes.
powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Bengkulu in the early hours on Friday, leaving dozens of homes damaged and sparking widespread panic among residents.
Initially reported at a magnitude of 6.3 and then downgraded later by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the undersea tremor rocked the coastal Sumatra region at 2:52 a.m., its epicenter located around 43 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu at a depth of 84 kilometers.
Footage from Selebar district in provincial capital Bengkulu, one of the hardest-hit areas, showed dozens of homes with crumbling walls, collapsed roofs atop cars and residents trying to salvage belongings from beneath the rubble of their homes.
"The quake was so strong, it woke us from our sleep. Glasses and cups fell off the shelves," said Bengkulu resident Lala Maisa, as quoted by Kompas.com, describing the panic that swept through the city when the earthquake struck.
Ronal, another resident, said he and his family were jolted awake by the tremor and immediately ran outside.
"The strong shaking reminded us of the massive earthquake that hit Bengkulu in 2000," he said, referring to the devastating 7.9-magnitude tremor that struck the city on June 4 almost 25 years ago.
That disaster killed 94 people and injured nearly 1,800 others. It also leveled around 1,800 homes and damaged more than 10,100 buildings.
