P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has said that notaries should adapt to changing technology if they don't want to get left behind.

"In the past, a notary's bag was filled with pens, stamps, and seals. Now it should be filled with a laptop and a tablet that is connected to the internet, so that if clients need something done it can be quickly taken care of online," Jokowi said on Thursday at the International Congress of Notaries in Jakarta.

The congress, held at the Jakarta Convention Center in Central Jakarta and attended by around 1,500 notaries from around the world, was themed "The Validity of Notarial Principles in the 21st century."

"I understand that technology changes quickly, but if notaries don't change as well, notaries will be left behind and abandoned by clients," Jokowi said, as quoted by Antara.

He added that notaries should also make use of technology such as video to do their work more efficiently.

"Every country is affected by this era of disruption, which brings new and difficult challenges that governments, businessmen, as well as notaries have to adapt to," he said. "The fast will defeat the slow, and those who are quick to adapt to technology will win out against those who are not tech-savvy." (kmt)
