he hiking trail from Kledung village to the summit of Mount Sindoro in Central Java is set to be reopened for hikers on Wednesday after being closed since Jan. 6 because of bad weather.
"Since the weather has gotten better, hiking activities can resume and the Kledung trail will be opened starting Jan. 22," said Basori Setiyawan, the supervisor of Sindoro Youth Basecamp (Grasindo) of Kledung, as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.
Basori said during the period of the closure, which also aimed to revitalize and preserve the natural ecosystem along the hiking route, the mountain rangers had cleaned up the trails and especially removed trash previously left by irresponsible hikers.
Mt. Sindoro, which is 3,136 meters above sea level, in Temanggung, and its neighboring Mount Sumbing are among the favorite hiking destinations in the region given their supporting infrastructure and beautiful views of tea plantations along the hiking trail.
Besides Kledung, hikers can also reach the summit via the Tambi Tea Plantation route in Sigedang.
Sindoro is an active stratovolcano. Hikers can view a small lava dome at the volcano’s summit. (gis)
