Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited President Prabowo Subianto to the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in mid-June.

They spoke over the phone on Friday, and in that conversation Carney extended an invitation to Prabowo for the annual meeting held between the world’s largest economies.

“In their phone discussion, Carner expressed hope for Prabowo’s attendance at G7,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a statement released over the weekend.

The summit, slated for June 15 to 17 in Kananaskisin Canadian province of Alberta, is expected to host discussions on issues ranging from global security, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the global economy, trade policies, technology governance and global health.

Indonesia is not a member of the G7 but has attended several of its summits as a guest. Prabowo’s predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, for example, had several times attended the summit during his decade in office, including in 2016 and 2023 in Japan and in 2022 in Germany where he engaged in discussions on climate change, developing countries and food security.

Besides Indonesia, Carney has also extended an invitation to some leaders from non-G7 countries, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Having confirmed their attendance are Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. A full list of invitees has not yet been released.
