Crocodile capsizes boat, kills fisherman in South Sumatra

35-year-old fisherman has been killed by a crocodile after his boat capsized in the Bungin River in Banyuasin regency, South Sumatra.
The police found the victim, identified as Rustam, in the river at about 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
Sungsang Police chief First Insp. Bambang Wiyono said Rustam had gone fishing on the river with his 70-year-old grandfather, Gani, on early Tuesday morning.
When they lifted the net that they had set out the night before, a crocodile hit their boat, causing both men to fall into the river.
“[Rustam] was mauled by a crocodile, while [Gani] survived and managed to swim to the river bank,” Bambang said on Wednesday.

Gani called for help when he got to land, leading other fishermen in the area to try to rescue Rustam.
“They tried to help the victim, but the crocodile had already dragged his body away, so they returned to the village and filed a report with the police. After searching for several hours, the victim was found dead,” Bambang said.
He asked people to take precautions near the river so that a similar accident would not happen again.
“A lot of crocodiles are living in the area, so it’s better to avoid fishing by oneself there,” he said as quoted by kompas.com. (dpk)
