The government is working to implement new categories of inpatient coverage for National Health Insurance (JKN) in 2022, as part of its efforts to restructure benefits for policyholders and ensure the deficit-stricken program’s sustainability. Under the planned new system, Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said the government would recategorize inpatient benefits into two service classes that would separate the recipients of contribution assistance (PBI) -- low-income patients whose premiums are fully paid by the state -- from non-PBI participants. PBI recipients account for 59 percent of the total 223 million policyholders, or about 133 million as of Nov. 1, according to the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan), which runs the JKN program.
