oreigners arriving from Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom are prohibited from entering Indonesia, two ministers said on Monday.

The government is also considering lengthening the quarantine period for all incoming travelers to 14 days next year in a measure to curb the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

“The government added those countries, given that the spread of Omicron has been rapid in all three,” Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan told the media on Monday, after a meeting with the President.

He went on to say that Indonesia had removed the entry ban for arrivals from Hong Kong. Indonesia currently prohibits entry from 13 countries, including 10 African countries.

Denmark, Norway and the UK have been facing rising cases of the Omicron variant over the past week. Media reported that Denmark and Norway projected that Omicron would account for the majority of new COVID-19 infections within weeks, while the UK has recorded close to 100,000 infections a day.

“Today, we put Denmark, Norway and the UK on the restricted countries list in an anticipatory step as we face the Omicron variant," Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said in a separate press conference, also on Monday.

Sandiaga added that the government was considering extending the mandatory self-quarantine for people entering from abroad by four days to a total of 14, starting in January.

However, such a measure would likely be a short-term one as the government would evaluate travel regulations along with the trends in COVID-19 cases.

“Amid the critical Omicron situation, we urge the public not to travel outside the country if it is not an urgent matter,” Sandiaga said, adding that people should spend their year-end vacation at home or at domestic tourist destinations.

The government has eased year-end holiday restrictions to allow people to travel outside of their cities of residence. Sandiaga projected the peak of year-end travel to occur in the third week of December.

He cited Transportation Ministry data showing that around 11 million people would travel within Indonesia during the holidays.
