In order to discover the virus, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) devices amplify the sample’s genetic material in cycles. The fewer cycles required to spot the virus, or the lower the CT value is, the higher the estimated viral load a sample may contain. Although studies are still limited, it is believed that the lower the CT value is -- also indicating a higher viral load -- the more infectious a person is, and vice versa.
Bogor Regent Ade Yasin said the samples had begun piling up toward the end of September because of the laboratory's limited polymerase chain reaction (PCR) examination tools, urging the Bogor Health Agency to accelerate its handling of the samples.
Amid persistent COVID-19 testing constraints, the government appears to be looking into using rapid antigen tests, which are cheaper and faster although less accurate than the gold-standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Experts are on board but urge caution.
