Previously, only Bahasa Indonesia and English were used.

"This is part of our effort to highlight local wisdom," said state-run airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I's Adisutjipto International Airport general manager Agus Pandu Purnama as quoted by tempo.co.

The move also aims to introduce and promote Javanese as a regional language to and foreign tourists.

"Yogyakarta is one of the main destinations in Java. It is important for airports to support their region's tourist industry," Agus added.

The airport's communication and legal section head Liza Anindya Rahmadia said the form of Javanese used would be the refined version, also known as kromo (ultra-polite). (dan/kes)
