A

uthorities are seeking to identify 11 bodies recovered from waters off Rokan Hilir regency in Riau, believed to be victims of separate boat accidents.

According to local authorities, fishermen discovered bodies at multiple locations over the past month. The first body was found on Nov. 7, followed by a second on Nov. 11. Another body was discovered on Dec. 2, two more the next day, and two additional bodies on Dec. 5. Three more bodies were found on Dec. 7 and 8.

“The last body was discovered on Dec. 10 by a 43-year-old captain, Rois, and his crew, who immediately recovered it and brought it ashore. They then reported the discovery to the Rokan Hilir Police Water and Air Unit,” said the head of the unit, Adj. Comr. Charisma Fajar Angkasa Putra, on Monday.

He said all the bodies were male and were recovered along a busy shipping route off North Sumatra that is frequently used by cargo vessels and fishing boats. None of the victims carried identification, and all were found in advanced stages of decomposition, making identification extremely difficult. Some of the bodies were also missing several body parts.

Authorities believe the victims had been drifting in the water for several days before being discovered.
